Imbued with the cultural impact of South and North China, "Diao Shi Zi",or literally, “moving a lion”,is a unique Chongming Island folk dance based on a folk story of Chongming people, "Zhou Bo Beats Pixiu", and the local sacrificial customs. Before and after performing "Diao Shi Zi" folk dance, the local people would hold a sacrificial ritual for "receiving" and "sending" the lion. The "lion-receiving" ritual is held before the lion dance begins. The dancers hold the lion on their shoulders, and parade to the Town God Temple while playing folk music. After arriving at the temple, the leading dancer would light candles and kowtow to the Town God while covering the lion skin on his body. And then, the lion dance begins. The "Diao Shi Zi" folk dance performance would be held on the second day of the second month of the lunar Chinese calendar. When the dance performance was over, the dancers would burn incense and kowtow in the temple and pray for favorable weather and peaceful life for people. This ritual is called "lion-sending".
In "Diao Shi Zi" folk dance, dancers combine the story of "Pixiu eat the children" with the dance. Unique for its appearance, the lion has an oblate and long mouth, a hollow cheek and protruding eyeballs. Its entire body is covered with long hair. The dance movements are unique, too. The dance is performed in slow and shaking pace, without showing the bold and unconstrained characters of lion. Accompanied with gong and drum music, e.g. "Hua Qi Ju", "Zou Ma Luo", "Chang Ban" and "Liu Zi Luo", the dance focuses on showing the process of a Pixiu eating the children.
